The
main Uruguayan meal and maybe the most worldwide known
Uruguayan food is the asado. The Uruguayan asado
consists of a specific variety of meat called ‘tira de
asado’, with ‘chorizos’ and other meat related elements,
cooked over firewood in special ovens locally called
‘parrilleros’. Uruguayan flavor owes its magic not only
due to the meal itself, but in the way Uruguayans gather
to meet, cook and eat together, many times playing
‘truco’, a typical Uruguayan card game.
Another highly recommended Uruguayan meal is the
‘chivito’. The chivito is a unique type of meat
sandwich containing ingredients such as bacon, cheese,
tomatoes, eggs, olives, onions, mayonnaise, ketchup and
others which can be customized to a person’s
preferences.
A
typical Uruguayan drink to accompany any meal is the
‘clerico’. Clerico consists of a combination of wines
and fruit juices, often apple juice, but it can contain
other juices as well. For those who enjoy a good cup of
wine, there is the traditional Uruguayan Tannat wine,
recognized to be among the best wines of the world.
